Welcoming Back Kennesaw Teachers

For more than 21 years the Kennesaw Business Association has been welcoming back teachers in the Kennesaw area. This year Fontis was proud to be a part of that tradition for the very first time.
On August 4, 2010, more than 300 teachers were treated to a lunch catered by Carrabba's Italian Restaurant at Big Shanty Elementary. And Fontis was proud to provide water for all those in attendance.
The teachers came from Awtrey Middle School, Big Shanty Elementary and Kennesaw Elementary. Not only were the teachers treated to lunch but each also received a goody bag with a $10 gift card to Carrabba's along with many other special treats.
Fontis says thanks to all the teachers who help shape our future leaders!

Selling water, a world away

Sitka, Alaska and two American companies are working towards an export agreement selling bulk shipments of fresh water to the middle east. Sitka and Alaska Resource Management LLC, the partnership formed by the two companies, are seeking to be the first to introduce bulk supplies of freshwater, transported in huge tanker ships, as a new commodity in global trade. The concept is straightforward. Where local supplies cannot meet demand, a small group of wildcatter companies and water-rich countries are positioning themselves to provide large shipments of water via 80-million-gallon capacity tanker ships and floating polythene bags–bulk water, in the industry parlance.

“The concept we have with our partner is constructing a water depot in India or the Middle East where water is unloaded and stored with an adjacent bottling tank,” Trapp told Circle of Blue. “The water would then be distributed to countries in two-and-a-half liter or five liter containers.” stated the company

Water is also exported by bottling companies. But the volumes sold from a single source are much smaller than the volumes available in bulk. Danone, the world’s second largest bottled water producer, sold 18 billion liters (4.8 billion gallons) in 2009 from all its bottling plants combined, a sales volume that is roughly half of the water available from Sitka.

What is new is the idea of shipping water in tankers across oceans. It differs in scale and the notion that big commercial advantages exist when a scarce commodity is supplied to eager communities willing to pay the price.

Sitka's Mayor Scott McAdams stated “I think the idea of selling bulk water to a thirsty planet has merit but its time has not yet arrived,” “Watersheds around the planet are under assault. The value of a commodity like water is only going to go up over time.” But, exporting water has come with much criticism. Proposals to export water supplies out of their natural basins have sparked fierce political resistance in some parts of the globe. The Great Lakes region of the U.S. Midwest established laws and regulations over the last decade that sought to ban the practice. Moreover, reliance on imports could perpetuate water-wasting practices in dry regions. And the capacity of wealthier regions to afford their water in five-liter containers could widen the economic and quality of life gulf between rich and poor countries.

If ARM breaks through the impediments, it could set off a run on Sitka’s 6.2 billion gallons per year of unallocated water rights. Two companies in the last six months have sent letters of inquiry about the city’s water supply for export to the Sitka Economic Development Association – American Water Company and Aqueous International, a subsidiary of a Luxemburg-based company.

Although no significant volumes of bulk water have been sold, A phrase on Aqueous International’s stationary perhaps captures best the prevailing mood in an industry that sees big profits in moving water by tanker. “Not a dream – inevitable!”

Water for Weight Loss?

Studies show that drinking 8 glasses of water a day can help fight off extra pounds and help in weight loss. Water is a natural appetite suppressant and helps the body metabolize stored fat. An increase in water intake can actually help get rid of fat!

Why?

The kidneys cannot function properly without enough water. When they do not work to capacity, some of their load is dumped on the liver. One of the liver's primary functions is to metabolize stored fat into usable energy for the body. But if the liver has to do some of the kidney's work, it cannot work at full throttle.

Drinking enough water every day is the best treatment for fluid retention. But when your body is given less water than it needs, it thinks the shortage is a threat to survival and will begin to hold on to the excess. This water can be seen as swollen feet, hands and legs.

Water helps to maintain proper muscle tone... which in turn, aids proper muscle contraction and prevents dehydration. It also helps to prevent the sagging skin that usually follows weight loss. Shrinking cells are buoyed by water which plums the skin and leaves it clear, healthy and resilient.

There is also evidence that drinking cold water actually burns more calories! Talk about the easiest workout ever!

River Run for Hope!

Fontis is excited to be participating again in the 2nd Annual River Run for Hope 5k at St. Andrews Catholic Church. Last year there were over 350 runners, and this year we are expecting over 500. At Fontis we love being part of events that bring the community together and help those that truly need it. All proceeds from the race will be donated to the Helping Hands Medical Missions.

Since 1996, HHMM has served more than 117,000 poor patients and hosted 75 medical missions in Mexico, El Salvador, Venezuela, Brazil, Dominican Republic, Guatemala, Philippines, and Ghana. Each mission is one week long and 10 missions are scheduled annually. Each mission group is comprised of approximately 25-45 participants, who volunteer their time, service, and medical supplies. Included in this group is the mission chaplain (priest) who accompanies the team for spiritual support. The mission site varies depending on the needs of certain communities and requests for help by local authorities and local clergy. To sustain ongoing care all sites are visited annually.

HELPING HANDS medical missionaries are Catholic doctors, nurses, and volunteers who come from all areas of the United States and Canada to join the host team of doctors. Participants pay their own round-trip airfare, mission fee (food, housing, ground transportation, etc.) and bring supplies and medicines. Missionaries work in small clinics, hospitals, schools and churches located in rural towns where they provide free medical care for thousands of patients in need of medical attention. Services include surgeries, eye care, consultations, and distributions of medications, follow-up of surgical patients house calls and Natural Family Planning instruction. The participants also take part in the mission’s spiritual program. Aspects of the mission includes daily prayer, Mass, meditation, and sharing the faith with the people of the town through home visits.

Gulf Coast Disaster

Since water is our game here at Fontis, I thought it only appropriate to post about the Gulf Coast Oil Disaster. This horrible tragedy has been going on for over a month and there is still no end in sight. When is it going to be enough for our government to step in?? After leaking 4 million gallons per day for the last 37 days we have 148 MILLION GALLONS of oil floating in the ocean.... and still counting.

It is destroying ecosystems, killing wildlife, coating the coastlines, and hurting the lives of many people who's careers and income center around the Gulf. In early May, the Louisiana seafood industry had already taken a $2.4 Billion dollar hit. the same people who are still trying to recover their businesses after hurricane Katrina. Speaking of hurricanes, I dont even want to imagine what would happen if a hurricane were to pop up right now.

After numerous failed attempts at patching the hole deep beneath the oceans surface, BP has another plan in action today. The "Top Kill" plan is the newest on the agenda which involves pouring concrete into the hole. If the plan works then it can slow the massive leak, if not then it could make a larger disaster. If this doesn't solve the problem, then there are talks of the government finally stepping in.

Why is BP just now trying this? Well, basically it is a last ditch effort. It has never even been attempted at this depth before and it is extremely risky! Very reassuring. I find it impossible to believe, that in a technologically advanced society that can actually WATCH the oil pouring out, that we cant do anything to stop it.

As you sit at home watching live feed of gushing oil, and you feel completely helpless... there is one thing that you can do! You can write your Senators and Congressman to encourage them to demand immediate action.

To contact your local Senator visit http://www.senate.gov/general/contact_information/senators_cfm.cfm

To get in touch with your congressman go here https://writerep.house.gov/writerep/welcome.shtml

Lets do our part and get this taken care of!

Drink up!

Water is beneficial to all cells in the body, without it, our bodies do not work properly. Here are examples of why drinking plenty of water is important to our health.

*Water is essential in preventing heart disease and strokes. Hydration keeps arteries of the heart and brain clot free.

*Water is beneficial in treating hypertension

*Water helps the body naturally replace serotonin which helps prevent depression.

*Dehydration can cause brain damage which can lead to conditions such as multiple sclerosis, Parkinson's disease and Alzenheimer's disease.

*Water is useful in preventing and treating sleep disorders. It is crucial in the production of melatonin which regulates sleep. If you want to catch more zzz's, drink more water!

*Water gives you energy! Water generates electrical and magnetic energy in every cell in the body, providing a natural power boost

*Water is essential for the skin. Proper hydration prevents sagging, aging, crows feet and wrinkles.Want to look young and refreshed? DRINK WATER!

*Water is cleansing and helps remove toxins from the body.

With all of these important reasons to drink water, how do you know if you are drinking enough?

It is recommended that the average person drink a minimum of eight 8 ounce glasses of water per day.If you are exercising the amount should be an additional 400 -600 milliliters to compensate for the fluids lost. Also, drink more water in the scorching southern summer months.

To be sure that you are drinking enough water, it is helpful and economical to use a refillable cup or bottle. My personal favorite is the Tervis Tumbler, I refill it countless times per day.

Drink up and stay hydrated!!
